Great writer, highly recommended for enthusiasts of dark humor
Nikolai Gogol was a 19th century Russian writer from modern day Ukraine. Most Ukrainians at the time, including Gogol, identified as Little Russian and had a strong sense of the Little Russian identity within the broader Imperial Russian identity. Gogol sought to introduce this culture to Russian literature, with much success.Gogol’s work is marked by cynical satire, and fans of dark humor in literature will love it. Also common throughout his stories is his interest in macabre themes, which range from eerie to absurd. Collected here are several of his short stories and novellas: “The Overcoat,” “The Nose,” “Memoirs of a Madman,” “A May Night,” and “The Viy.”Overall, this is a highly recommended look at the work of one of the most brilliant representatives of Russian literature.

It’s wordy.
Oh, it's just a literary masterpiece, a real page-turner. What do you want me to say? Shakespeare would be so jealous right now.

Some of the best short stories ever in the book.
Reading, of course. Stories not set in U.S. I learn a lot about other cultures, countries. If you are in the mood for short stories check the reviews. Well written, and mood changing.

Gogol's dark humor deserves a look
This collection of five stories reveals the ease with which Gogol's explains complicated situations and relationships, the difficulty of mid-nineteenth century life in Little Russia (modern Ukraine), and an underlying compassion for the poor and downtrodden. The title story became a beacon for generations of followers. The Nose is an exercise in the absurd. Memoirs of a Madman is an intriguing experiment. But Gogol's genius shines in A May Night a timeless story of youth versus their elders, and The Viy, which looks at the fear and superstition of the time through the eyes of young scholars. I particularly recommend these two last stkories.

Read this for Eng Lit Class
In context of the surrounding undergraduate eng lit class that I was enrolled in while reading The Overcoat and other short stories in this book, I thoroughly enjoyed the content as a meaningful piece of literature history.
