Captivating...
An unbiased account of what really transpired prior to, during, and after the EDSA "revolution" beyond what you learned in the Philippine history textbook of Zaide.

Marcos Perspective
It was logically written, and quite believable. On one hand, it sounded like a blaming game just like any anti-marcos books. It missed to point out the unintended consequences of Marcos dictatorship. I find it bordering fallacy. Not exactly worthwhile buying, unless you just want to read something about thr Philippines.

Revisionist’s project
In order to get the most of this books, reader must understand that his “factual narration” is the narration of events from the perspective of a Marcos apologist. A little bit of fact-checking will shed more light on his pro-Marcos agenda. He says that his sources are from government records, without making it clear to the reader that the records were produced by a Martial Law government itself. He blames communist rebels for his declaration of Martial Law saving the Filipinos from communist tyranny. He touts that it brought back peace and order without mentioning that there was peace because people were terrorized into submission by the military and Marcos’ personal militia, the Philippine Constabulary. He says that those who claim to be victims of torture and human rights abuses could barely give evidence, without mentioning that, unfortunately, the dead and “the disappeared” can no longer speak. He blames the IMF-World Bank for the economic depression suffered during the Marcos years, without mentioning—and this is the clincher— that the Marcos itself borrowed billions in order to fund his projects (most of the money ending up in the Marcoses personal family fund). The author blames laissez-faire capitalism for the poverty and economic backwardness of the country, without mentioning that the Marcoses forcibly seized a number of major corporations for their own profit and bankrupted the national bank. He blames capitalism (while condemning communism at the same time- hard for him to choose which is the real culprit), for the desperate plight of the poor without mentioning the lavish lifestyle the Marcos enjoyed at the expense of the Filipino people. Even the daughter of Marcos’ right-hand military man Gen. Fabian Ver says that she has much reckoning to do because she experienced first hand how the Marcoses lived. So, if magical thinking is what you’re is after, this is the book. Otherwise, save a few bucks and enjoy a frapuccino. At least it won’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
