This one guide that you need!
Planning a trip for 2015 so obviously I've writing this review beforehand. I've just started it again. Great reference guide. Has all the information I was looking for. A must read I would think. I bought 2 other book but this is by far the best. Tells you all the best routes to take to avoid the crush and really see the heart of America. The usual tourist sites aren't missed either but it's benefit is the the back roads. Prices for motels and restaurants are also included. Handy size so it perfect to take with you. It will be the first thing I pack! Great read.

Thorough, informative, and interesting book.
This book is very thorough not only in verbally mapping a road trip, but in describing what to see and why. I haven't taken any of the routes yet (I'm mainly an armchair traveler), but I have learned a great deal about some lesser known attractions to be found on two-lane highways. It reads like a travel diary, but is still instructive and informative."Road Trip USA" is organized by states and regions, so it is easy to read in sections for a virtual road trip or while actually travelling.

Used it, liked it, but didn't always follow it.
This book was my traveling companion as I crossed the country this year from NY to Vancouver and back. It was most helpful when I was following the routes that it set out for me. I found little places that I would not have known about..but many times I got off the route and onto my own path... then as expected it was not helpful at all. On the way back I followed it's advice from Seattle across Washington with such delight and enjoyment it made me wish that the author would have been right in front of me for the rest of the way sending me texts with his just-found tips. But at the border of Washington, I turned south when he turned north. With my ipad I found other helpful tips using Roadside America, Roadtrippers, GasBuddy, Yelp and great maps using Ulmon's City Maps to Go Pro. Book is a good read even if you aren't yet out on the road.

this book is very informative
the info is very useful to travelers. i am planning a cross country trip when i retire and this book is helpful in planning my route. the suggestions for sightseeing and dining will come in handy. my only complaint (if i can call it that) is that i ordered three editions of this book, under the impression that each book contained different routes. i was wrong. each edition is basically an updated version with mostly the same info. one edition is all you need.

I LOVE this series of books
I LOVE this series of books. Lot's of helpful tips and insights. I just love his style of writing, so informative in a nice narrative style. I think I might be missing a couple of these, but so far so good! Even if you don't take trips or are looking for detailed travel info (which anyone can get for free on the internet) this series is just a pure joy to read one traveler's perspective.

Informative but not a guide
I found the book had too much information and not the right kind. It gave historical facts about the areas, picked out one or two highlights and that's it. It didn't give much information about the proper "touristy" sights, let's face it that's why we go on road trips, nor did it give you much of an in site to hotel, hostels, rv campsites or their costs in different areas. It did have some useful information but I wouldnt use it as my guide book.

Not Very Useful
I found this book almost useless in planning a road trip from Florida to Vancouver and back. The book is a collection of six north to south routes and five east to west routes that are basically semi-straight lines drawn on a map with descriptions of points of interest along the way. It's the sort of book you could write without ever leaving home. I found the following two books vastly superior if you're willing to do your own route planning (listed in the order of preference): Reader's Digest "The Most Scenic Drives in America" and Reader's Digest "Off the Beaten Path". Don't waste your money on National Geographic's "Drives of a Lifetime" if you're only interested in U.S. travel.

I want to retire....and travel NOW
Purchased the book as a gift for my husband, the Harley enthusiast. Find myself reading it and wondering about all the incredible places yet to find. We can't retire fast enough and begin these journeys. The descriptions are detailed enough to gain interest without "giving the store away" and the off-the-paved-road approach to seeing America is excellent. I also appreciate that all the other publications are subsumed in this one!
