Amazing
these disc brakes are the bomb, if correctly installed they slow down and even stop my bicycle once I pull the handle. in the past I used my brakes only going down Hill but i am so amazed by these brakes that I even use them going up a hill, it makes it a bit harder to get somewhere but I cannot stop using these brakes.

Stops
It stops the bicycle like its suppose to. you mount it on the wheel and add a cable so when you squeeze the brake the cycle stops.

2 Catastrophic failures (front, back)
I have had these for a couple years, they were stock on my GT but I do adjust them and get new pads when needed. Lately after moving to Japan I don't ride trails much anymore but commute on some steep hills with lots of sharp turns so I still need braking power. On one hill near my work the front brake suddenly failed completely on my way home. I pressed my lever and felt resistance, then a click sound, then nothing. The hill was so steep that my rear brake was not enough power by itself, and there was a 90 degree turn at the bottom with a fence. I managed the turn at speed but still crashed into a van parked right around the corner and ended up in the hospital for some patching up. Luckily no broken bones, although some of my road rash was into muscle tissue. So what happened? I inspected the brakes as is on the bike, and could still hear the clicking noise when depressing the lever. I disassembled and found the spring inside the rotor that returns the rotor to start position had escaped it's footing. This is basically a 2 mm long bend in the end of the spring that sits in a hole. I could see the scratch marks from where it was popping out (making the clicking noise).I wrote to Tektro and asked what to do about it. No response, which as I gather from other reviewers, is what they are at least consistent at.I don't have any cash for new brakes so I reassembled and rode like an old granny for a few months, walking my bike down steep hills. The brakes didn't give me any more trouble after I re-seated the spring so I decided to keep them and just not go fast on steep hills until I could afford something to replace them with.3 months later, same hill and my rear brake just did the same thing, clicking and no power. Luckily I was ready enough and the front brake let me slow down and walk the bike down. I haven't disassembled yet but expect to find the same failure. I will write to Tektro again and expect them to ignore me. This is absolutely unacceptable, a part that you NEED to work for safety. I am just commuting and these failed me once on the front and once on the back. I would not put my life in the hands of these brakes on a trail. I won't be riding with these anymore and I will be switching my wife's brakes from Tektro as well. If these come stock on a bike, see if you can upgrade before purchase. Hell, downgrade, get v-brakes and at least you can be certain you won't have a complete failure in them. Now, that being said... riding with these has never been much of an issue when they work (99.999% of the time I guess). They can squeek if they get wet or dirty. If they are dirty, you can clean the pads, what works for me is light sandpaper. If they squeek while riding in wet weather, I brake a few times to warm them up at the beginning of a ride and the noise goes away quickly enough.

Very annoying and as some other reviewers have noted
Default brakes on my 5/6 year old Trek Marlin. Regular maintenance and swapping out for new pads has helped with the lifespan. Work well as a beginner/entry level brake. Agonizingly noisy. However, I've had some fairly dangerous failures. My rear caliper froze and locked up on a sharp downhill trail; absolutely ruined my tire about six weeks ago. I've also had a problem every few months with the front caliper clicking, and then no brakes. Very annoying and as some other reviewers have noted, fairly dangerous. I'm lucky I've been riding since I was six.I'm going to get rid of these, I should have done it years ago when I really started to get into mountain biking. Tektro has refused to respond to me, and the calipers themselves are showing dangerous wear (I'm a bike mechanic and I'm in a shop, no amount of maintenance is going to fix/maintain bottom-level crap components for long)

Note that everyone complains about the pads !
I actually work in a bike shop and I Know many friends that also work in bike shops. These Tektro Novella brakes work great if they have the real original Tektro brake pads inside ! If your brakes are squeaking then you don't have the real Tektro metallic brake pads inside ! WHY ? Because so many bikes shops and internet sellers take out the original brake pads before they sell them to YOU ! They just put cheap Chinese organic knock off pads that don't come from Tektro. The organic cheap Chinese brake pads cost the bike shops $2.00 a set. The Real Tektro brake pads cost $17.00 a set. Especially on the internet everyone is taking out the REAL GOOD Tektro pads and selling you the organic crap pads. The actual Tektro Novella brakes with the REAL pads work GREAT! I have been fixing bikes for over 30 years so I know good brakes. If your pads squeak I can tell you that you don't have the real Tektro metallic pads. Someone swapped them out to make an extra $15.00 and they hoped you would never find out. Thanks ALL

Let's Be Fair, It's Decent and Powerful.
1. Disk brakes require maintenance. Performance varies a lot at this point. Without proper installation and care, it can perform very badly.2. It is powerful. I recently upgraded to a BB7, they are so different. With this Novela, you can lock up your rear wheel very easily. On the other hand, BB7 is more of a "linear brake" which offers a wide range of braking power. (You can lock up your wheel too, but it is difficult, like an ABS sys.) The Novela, what makes it a worse brake is, it does great if you pull hardly and immediately get your rear wheel lock up (static friction), and offers very little power with the wheel spinning. I start and brake a lot, this is how my rear tire just retired.3. Pads are so bad. The pads that come with it got worn out within 2 weeks. Very noisy pads, louder than anything. BB7 screams too, but in a more "decent" way. It's a 4 stars brake if with nicer pads. For people who ride aggressively and don't care for the brakes/tires, get this and do some tail swings... Otherwise I would not recommend it, simply because it's not that cheap.
