This gauge is great for carrying to the steel yard to hunt for drops. It has the typical sizes most people would look for. The larger, circular gauges have more sizes but I'm really only looking for a small handful of plate and this smaller, easier to carry gauge fits those. The large circle gauges don't fit my pockets well at least without tearing up the material in my pants! Don't you hate that? TIP - When you're shopping for just a couple sizes, draw marks around those gauge spots with a sharpie pen. Makes it easier to quickly see the appropriate slot when you're upside down, holding a big piece of steel out of the way, sweat in your eyes etc. When you're finished, wipe the sharpie off with rubbing alcohol if you don't need those marks any more. NUTHER TIP - Write notes on the back of the thing with that same sharpie. Decimal to fractional equivalents, weight of various thicknesses of steel, phone numbers of cute girls that work at the steel yard etc.

One of these came with my new Hobart welder, it was printed Hobart not Miller. I thought it was a cool key chain. I lost it when I left it on the trailer and took off down the road. Don’t care about the keys but didn’t want to lose the key chain. I was surprised to find one on Amazon. So now I got my favorite key chain back.

The gauge is made of metal and the numbers on the item can be seen, but need to be more legible. The item will help confirm the size of metal being worked with to determine how the metal should be welded.

Now I can specify the sheet metal gauge that I'll need for my metal projects.

I use this product for measuring thicknesses of sheet steel and tubing. I keep one at my desk for reference when reviewing plans or mockups for welding. This tells me at a glance immediately what type of wire and setting on a welder should be used - within a range. Miller includes one of these in every welder they ship, although I purchased this independently. While it is not micrometer accurate, most metal fabrication does not require that level of precision. This is just a tool to quickly identify metal thickness. The chart on the welder spool door should still be reviewed and then a test weld done to dial in the speed and voltage.

Went to the metal scrap yard last week. Carried two indispensable tools with me; this sheet metal gauge and a tape measure. The gauge helped me sort through16ga and18ga plate in the rack. Very useful little tool! Thanks Miller.
