I was disappointed
I didn't realize this book was a biography of Willard Bean. I was more interested in his experiences in Palmyra, New York, than I was in his life before Palmyra. This isn't a criticism of the book. I clearly misunderstood what I was purchasing. I found another book which provided the information I was looking for.

"Well, he looks natural."
Willard Bean was the flamboyant boxer-turned-missionary who resurrected Mormonism in its hometown of Palmyra, New York. I read this book hoping to learn about the character of Bean and the defensive, backwater canal town that he befriended. Unfortunately, this amateur effort fails to deliver any real information about either subject. Willard Bean, "The fighting parson": The rebirth of Mormonism in Palmyra is not a history in any sense. Ms. Topliff (a granddaughter of Willard Bean) has merely combined anecdotal reminiscences from her grandfather and father with a few references from the family scrapbook. She checked none of the stories for accuracy. I note the claim that Bean was a middleweight champion of the US (not even a close exaggeration) and Bean's fictionalized description of the Kane Creek massacre (read the powerful true story in The Autobiography of B.H. Roberts ).Disappointed with the lack of historical content, I could still recommend a book like this for its insight into the traditions of an interesting family. But towards the end of the book I realized that Ms. Topliff had willfully concealed Willard Bean's first marriage and the eldest two children who moved with him to Palmyra. The result is neither history nor homage. It's just a shame. One thing I know: Willard Bean deserves to look more natural than this.

Love this book
This is a great book and about a real person who had wonderful and uncommonly good values in life. It's a must read. there is a movie about Willard Bean and it is one of the best family movies you can fine, it's called the "Fighting Preacher".
