Q: Will thest be good in an outdoor enviornment? Could moisture cause rusting?

Nope, wouldn't use this outside will rust. Not galvanized steel

Q: Do they have a solid backing? Other's I've seen have no back at all, which won't work for my purposes.

Yes they have a solid backing. HOWEVER, the backing is not a flat back in the same plane as the mounting plane. Instead the back is a steel cup below the ball and inside the ball enclosure. So the backing cup and the enclosure make a complete surround of the ball except for the top from which the ball protrudes.

Q: What is the larges size bolt you can use to thro bolt with on these bearing holes?

The actual diameter of the holes is 3/16".

Q: I'm looking for an alternative to casters. Will these work on carpet?

I used a couple of these on the underside of a porch gate to help keep the gate from sagging and to help with a smoother opening and closing. So far it's working great. I don't think these would be good on carpet, even commercial carpeting. Any weight they carried would make them sink into the carpet and the bearing isn't exposed enough for that. It's just barely exposed enough to roll on a solid surface.
