So many need to be fixed by screws to the toilet. Does this?

No, no screws or anything to attach to the toilet. This one is completely free-standing. I bought it for my elderly dad, who is a big man--this is perfect...VERY strong and he loves it. But, my mother who is much smaller, thinks it's wonderful, as well.

what are the dimensions?

20 inches of space from left to right. The top of each side (where you grab to push yourself up off the toilet seat) comes up 30 inches from the floor. The distance from the back bar (which is as far back as your back can go) is 20 inches from front to back. BUT, a better measurement front to back is how far it is from the back to where your hand safely grips the hand holds - 14 inches at most. Our toilet seat is at 17 inches from the floor.

What is the max pounds for support

On the Carex.com website it says wt. capacity is 300. I'm assuming that's pounds. Doesn't say anywhere on the box it came in or the instructions for assembly. For someone w/balance issues or can use only one arm; it is a little wiggly, yet stable since there are 4 legs... Like a walker w/out wheels. Like the adjustable ht. hope this helped.

what is the width between the arm rests?

There is 20" of space between (interior side of arm rest to interior side of arm rest) the arm rests. I just measured it on mine.
