does the crossover have to be installed or will a 50wpc head unit blow the tweeters?

The crossovers are what you are paying for. Proper frequencies to appropriate sized speakers is what allows higher volume with out distortion. You are better off using crossovers with CHEAP speakers than the best speakers in the world, pushing beyond their capabilities. The tweeters sound good at 3k and above. mids, (3") 315-4k and the 6.5" 315 Hz and below.

How do I know there are real focal speakers and not the counterfeit speakers that are going around?

The price would be the first indication. The only for sure way is to purchase from a authorized distributor. That is the only way to get the manufacturer warranty. There are difference with the packaging and a few other things. You can see examples on focal's website. Unfortunately, you will not know till you purchased them. If they are going to make fake speaker sets they will use pictures of real ones.
