A great way to get young students to learn about coding ... both in a book and online!
Perhaps youโve always wanted to learn about programming and what itโs all about. Not to worry, Data Duck will get you started. He tells us that โa computer programmer is someone who writes programs that tell a computer what to do.โ Data Duck will get you going by giving you some instructions. You can learn as you go by actually practicing what you know online ... in real time! Of course weโre getting ahead of ourselves because first of all youโll have to learn some โkey termsโ such as algorithm, objects, Java, program, syntax, coordinates, HTML, Python, and Scratch. Already overwhelmed? Donโt be because Data Duck will lead you through all the steps you need to take to learn some basics. When the programmer tells a computer what to do it uses a โlist of instructions,โ an algorithm. The language that your computer understands is called a โcode.โ Now in order for your computer to understand what you are instructing it to do, it will need โstep-by-step instructions.โ Data Duck lets you know that you have to give very clear, exact instructions or the program just wonโt work. Now, Data Duck goes over all those โdifferent languagesโ youโll need so your computer can understand what you are instructing it to do. He tells you that they are HTML, Scratch, Python, and Java. Data Duck tells you a bit about each one. For example, he says that โScratch was written for kinds to help them make their own computer programsโ and that โIt uses blocks that we can snap together to build instruction lists.โ In this book youโll also learn about the need to follow rules, bugs โn debugging, how computers make decisions, location instructions, coordinates, and youโll learn many more interesting things about computer programming! This is a basic book about computer programming for young students. This is a curriculum-based beginning chapter book that would be perfect to help launch our youngest computer buffs into coding. This book can / should be used in conjunction with the blue {shift} website where children can practice what theyโve learned. There are exercises that can be worked on at home or in a classroom. For example, you can learn more about debugging, writing programs, learn to predict what programs will do, and work with coordinates. Of course Data Duck will be there to help. This series, โKids Get Coding,โ is an excellent one to the world of coding. misleading title...should be called....intro to coding or concepts of coding
this book is a series of simple tasks/games that introduces kids to the CONCEPTS of CODING...Dont expect your kids to learn computer programming just with this ...you have to sit with them and hand hold them if your early elementary aged kids, also kids need to be able to read on their own before they can use this book

SO CUTE AND WONDERFUL
I loved this book! This is the perfect beginner book for anyone (even adults) to learn to program. This instructions are clear, the activities are cute and interesting and the illustrations are adorable! A wonderful book to have in a home or classroom!

Well-meaning but wrong
This book tries to teach kids about programming, but some of the things it teaches are obviously wrong. There's an example with some center justified python code, even though white space matters in python.

Just the basics!
Good, though very basic book on coding--probably best for the very young (up to early elementary). It does a nice job of explaining the basics of coding (so much so that clueless adults who are reading it out loud might learn a few things!) Nicely laid out and good illustrations. Rating: 4 stars / B+ I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
