The Adventures of Robin Hood (Puffin Classics) Review: So beautiful - Purchased a few of these after finding a copy of one at a thrift store. Nice selection of classics and they look so pretty on the shelf! Will probably get more and save them for future grandchildren. Until then, I will enjoy them myself. Review: Kristofer's review - In The Adventures of Robin Hood, Robin Hood or his real name, Robert Fitzooth is a well-known outlaw in Sherwood Forest. He and his band called the Merry Men must fight to bring good to the old king and Robin’s father King Richard. New people help them along their journey to fight Guy of Gisborne and the Sheriff Nottingham. The Adventure of Robin Hood is a great novel and it is enjoyable to read. It also teaches the lesson that being good does not always mean following the rules. For example, Robin broke many laws by saving someone from being executed to help the people who are being ruled by the kingdom with tyranny. The setting of the timeline is enjoying for people interested in the medieval times. The use of a bow and arrow along with the method of execution was common during that time frame. The buildings, people, and the jobs including the bishops are all medieval. The action in the book has many details, which makes the novel more compelling. There were many fights that the Merry Men fought and there were also many duels that Robin Hood encouraged the duelist to join him and the Merry Men. Besides the actions there were dialogs and even romance between certain characters like Robin Hood and Lady Marian. The women even fought in some battles and even took care of themselves by fighting. This is a great novel for people who like non-stop action and the novel is not boring and can be read for enjoyment. I encourage other students from ages 12-15 year olds to read the novel.

and he is pretty good. It is just about perfect for my ...
Bought this to read with my 9 year old. I am an avid reader and have studied literature, but this prose is occasionally difficult to get through. I couldn't imagine him being able to read it himself, and he is pretty good. It is just about perfect for my use - we unschool, so as we get to terms, phrases, ideas, and historical info that isn't familiar, we delve into impromptu 'lessons' about the Crusades, Medieval times, caste systems, religion and politics' dance through history, and so on. I love the spattering of the original old English poetry and stories at the beginning of the chapters, and the sourcing is great. It is interesting and lively, fun to read, and spurs all sorts of creative activities, sparring, and other lessons. A great book for igniting creativity and building research skills off of. Depending on your child's ability to grasp words and ideas in loose context and reading level, might be good for older kids, definitely for teens, and great for adults.

Still a Classic
With the Tea Party in the USA agitating for less government, the story of Robin Hood is even more relevant today than it ever was. Just like the Tea Party, Robin Hood vanquished corrupt, supposed law keepers, and helped people of upstanding character to keep their homes and possessions from ravaging Big Government, who taxes us to oblivion. Along with Tales from King Arthur, Robin Hood illustrates why the British mind-set, before all others, set the tone for a legal and government system that protects the rights of the individual over an oppressive government. King Arthur's knights protect and defend ladies in distress and other helpless victims. Robin Hood continues in this strain. He protects and defends anyone who is oppressed by an institutionalized system led by a corrupt individual, and he has fun doing it. Our country, the United States of America, as it was conceived by our founding fathers, owes a great deal to the enduring legacy of Robin Hood. Roger Lancelyn Green's rendition is complete and very readable, as are all his retellings of classic stories.

Roger Lancelyn Green has certainly won my heart by this page-turner! In this single book every tale of Robin Hood and his outlaws are included i.e. how Robin Hood saves Allin-a-Dale's sweetheart or how Sir Richard of Legh paid the Abbot and so on. There are also ballads and poems of Robin Hood at the beginning of every chapter in addition to this there are illustrations which make the book easier to understand. At the end of the book there is a glossary also it is a ready help for the young readers like me.The Author File which every Puffin classic has helps you know a lot about the author.I highly recommend this book for every age.

Two other books by Roger Lancelyn Green (Tales of the Norsemen and King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table) are amongst my favourite from my childhood. I read them innumerable times, and they along with other books by members of The Inklings (Tolkien and CS Lewis) basically defined the archetype for those kinds of books which I now find myself drawn to. I only pieced this all together relatively recently, however; searching online for editions of books I half-remembered. When I came across this copy of Robin Hood by RL Green I didn't hesitate to "add it to my basket" (and there are many more besides which I will be investigating). I am happy I have made these investigations. This is another classic which though written for children is no less enjoyable for adults. RL Green's works have a wonderful simplicity to them. They are the distillate of what a really good story should be. His attention to source material is also admirable, and within the introduction of this book he has provided a fascinating outline of the history of the legends of Robin Hood. I couldn't recommend this book and moreover this author more strongly.
