Foo dogs or Chinese guardian lions have for centuries stood in front of residences of emperors and other powerful and rich people in China. They are supposed to have protective powers. They are always used in pairs which would consist of a male resting his paw upon an embroidered ball which represents power over the world and a female holding a cub which stands for nurturing. Of course there are also simpler versions as shown in our small pair which was cast from cement and carefully finished by Balinese artisans in the artist town of Ubud.
