Historiography in the Twentieth Century: From Scientific Objectivity to the Postmodern Challenge

Another excellent book from Iggers.
A short profound modern historiography book from Iggers. Apart from the broad scope, this book also covers the challenging threat from postmodernism or linguistic turn for the history writings which Iggers can defend nicely. This book is a must for the person that is interesting in historiography.

Iggers discusses the different schools of historiography that developed in the 20th Century. Invaluable when writing historical essays and book reviews for my classes.

Good read
This is a decent historiography over view text. At times Iggers has some inaccuracies, but the work helps understand some foundational theories.

Writing History
Having retired form teaching history in 1999, Mr. Iggers presented wonderful insights and understanding as to the changes in approaches to writing 'histories' in the postmodern period.

Clear and comprehensive
Very lucid exposition of main currents of history writing in the 20th century. The only "but" is that occasionally it gets a little repetitive.

The transformations of historiography within and beyond the 20th Century
A number of works have been published since E H Carr classic “What is history” , all attempting to chart the transformations and the challenges to historical research and writing. Iggers book stands favourable comparison with the works of Richard Evans, Peter Novick, John Tosh and others about the developments of modern historiography. Like a number of social sciences, historical studies have experienced major reorientations to reflect the fundamental changes in society and culture since WW II. The paradigm of objectivity initiated by Ranke has long been questioned, further undermined by the post modern alternatives like the linguistic turn or Subaltern studies, which have opened up the discipline to different approaches and priorities. Narrative Political history may have fallen out of favour and Western historiography is increasingly challenged by comparative intercultural studies. Micro history, cultural history and everyday life history are new targets of research for the new historians. Many of the research methods are borrowed from other social sciences with mixed results. In spite of a lack of consensus about methodology and valid resources, let alone the selection of spheres of historical research, departments of history have proliferated and torrents of historical publications, both high brow and popular, are flooding the market. History has never been so popular with an expanding body of consumers. It seems that no aspect of the human condition or its institutions, its artefacts or intellectual endeavour are immune from the probing of the specialist researchers . Historical thinking is continuously undergoing profound transformations, enriched by cross fertilisation with other disciplines. Our author is a reliable guide to the modern historiography. His book has been reissued a number of times and published in ten different languages.
