A great deal. A wonderful double bill in excellent blu-ray transfers at an incredibly modest price.
This is a great deal. These are two great films, very different in style, but thematically liked an an intelligent way so few of these 'double bill' features are."In Cold Blood" is one of the great crime films ever made. Stunning in every department - acting, photography, editing, score - Richard Brooks' film of Truman Capote's true crime book pulls off the near impossible by building to what is still one of the most deeply disturbing scenes of murder ever filmed, yet still making us question the sanity of the death penalty, even in the face of the grossest outrages against human decency. And takes two of the most unredeemable characters, and yet makes us - at moments - understand, and even sympathize. A film that will give you nightmares and also make you think."Capote" is Bennett Miller's highly intelligent biographic drama of the brilliant writer who created "In Cold Blood", and tells the story of how Capote came to write the book and how deeply the process of getting to know these killers effected him. The always brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman gave what may have been the greatest of all his screen performances. On the exterior level he completely transforms himself into Capote - the look, the voice, the mannerisms. But this is far more than a stunt of imitation. He captures the soul of the man tormented by moral dilemmas with no answers, compelled as an artist to keep moving forward, but aware of how much the process was costing him. Catherine Keener also does superb work as Capote's long time friend, the novelist Harper Lee ('To Kill a Mockingbird'). Keener is one of those actresses whose work is so subtle and natural that it's easy to overlook just how terrific she is. And here she gets to go further afield from her usual on-screen persona than usual, and reminds us that she can go a lot further into a character than she's often called to.It's a deeply thoughtful double bill - a classic interpretation of a classic book, and an insightful, brilliantly done look into the creation of that book. The two films are on separate blu-rays, so they are not over-compressed, as putting them on one disc would have done. And while this earlier transfer of the more visually spectacular "In Cold Blood" isn't quite up to Criterion's amazing new version, it's still very good indeed. For the current asking price of about $6, that's an amazing buy on two important and great pieces of cinema.

How are there no reviews for this wonderful package yet?
Back when I was a senior in high school, I remember watching both of these films, and though In Cold Blood is the superior picture, they were both worthwhile of a movie collection. Soon enough, I got my laptop (which has a Blu-Ray drive in it with a HDMI output), and when this got released, it was on the Marketplace for cheap ($20!!!!).Both films are based on the same crime/story. In Cold Blood is the story Truman Capote wrote about two killers who killed a family in Kansas (Robert Blake is one of the murderers in the movie in a ironic musing), go on the lam because of it, and then get the death penalty when they were caught. Capote was the movie that featured Phillip Seymour Hoffman in a prized role as the title character who interviews the men of the murders in prison and is therefore forever changed because of it.This double-feature is not bonus-feature laden at all, as Capote has a port of all its bonus features from the DVD while In Cold Blood has nothing, just like its original DVD release. Though there are BD-Live features, I would assume there is not much to them. In that sense, it is forgiven because both movies are so strong on their own, plus you could consider Capote as a companion piece to In Cold Blood. .Now, onto the price. I do think the price is a little steep, but if you can find it cheaper (like 25 to 30), and if you love the BD format, then go ahead and get this. The picture quality is good, the sound is good, and the movies do not appear to be "touched up" to look great on this format. This package from me gets a two-thumbs up!

5 stars to both
Real life drama at its best. Both movies pulled no bunches telling the true story of the brutal slaying a normal Midwest family by two obviously disturbed individuals. Both stories are well told, with excellent cinematography, and excellent acting. The music grips you and calms and is blended throughout the movie to enhance the drama; thank you Quincy Jones and Mychael Danna. Add the HD of blue ray and you are in cinema heaven. Being alive when the murders occurred and living the presence of Capote I can say that Phillip Seymour Hoffman portrayed him perfectly. I was amazed. After this brutal murder everyone who never locked their door began turning the latch key. That was the impact this murder had on the American culture. Excellent drama and it is sad that it had to be real.

Knowing that I will never see another brilliant performance by him
Hoffman is genius in this. Have been interested in the Clutter murders for many years. I have seen the couple of movies that have been made about the murders and when the movie Capote came out I knew it was a must see.I was extremely saddened by the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Knowing that I will never see another brilliant performance by him. I know it sounds selfish but he had such a gift that he gave millions of people.

THIS $30.00 PLUS PRICE IS OUTRAGOUS
I purchased this blu ray dvd for $13.99 soon after the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Simply because of his magnificent performance as Capote and the very GOOD film, In Cold Blood from the 60s. To skyrocket this set of moives to 33.00 and change is taking ADVANTAGE of Mr. Hoffman's death and in POOR, POOR TASTE. I give it 4 stars for the quality of the movies and a resounding "F" for the seller taking advantage of a death.

GREAT JOB BY MR MR HOFFMAN!!
Mr Hoffman was excellent on this role. I was very impressed with the way he took on this role and ending up winning the best actor academy award for that year! very well deserved. I never cared to c it before he past away and then I decided to do it, if not more than my way to pay my respects to him as an actor, I felt I owed him that much. I'm glad I did. and I regret waiting that long. We will miss Mr Hoffman and his work!

The original film or the film about the story that inspired the original film? The answer is: both!
The original film or the film about the story that inspired the original film? The answer is: both!In cold blood is an essential and cold-blooded great adaptation of Capote's splendid book, directed with a sense of bitter and inevitable tragic drama and yet almost documentarian in the way it tells the whole story.Capote is a surprising and evocative look at what was behind the scenes, what came before the book, and it does it in a very unconventional way, almost poetically trying to make us breathe the drama in the drama, that of Capote investigating on such a sad crime, where even criminals look, at the end of the day, more human and less cold-blooded..Both presented on excellent blu ray editions.

Capote.
I had already read the novel some time ago,and became a great fan of Truman Capote, his style of writing could make you feel theemotions of the characters,I was captivated right from the first chapter, and literally did not put the book down until I had readevery word.I have just bought and watched the film Capote and once again, felt as though I knew all the characters involved, and shared all the emotions of the main characters, but, most of all Philip Seymour Hoffman, right before your eyes, became Truman Capote. I have always admired mr.Hoffmans work, but this characterization of Truman Capote, will live with me for a very long time, what a tragedy that an actor of that calibre has lefyt us.
