Versatile Winch for Ranch and Off-Road Use
This is the second OpenRoad brand winch we've used on the ranch, and the 3000-pound rated capacity is no joke! Setup was straightforward, and learning how to operate the wireless controller was simple. We really appreciate the ability to stand at a safe distance from the winch line while it’s under load. Initially, the wireless remote was seriously unreliable. I tried replacing the pre-installed 23A batteries (2 per remote) with a brand-name set, after that the overall reliability of the wireless winch control improved. We still on occasion (maybe 1 out of 10 uses) will have what seems to be a pairing issue between the remote and the receiver. This could be related to our setup and application, swapping the winch between vehicles. (Minus 1 Star)The 50-foot synthetic rope offers about 40 feet of workable length before it starts to thin near the reel. I wish the working length were longer, but there are always ways to work around that limitation. The gear ratio is well-balanced, providing a reasonable pulling speed while still having the “grunt” strength to handle heavy loads. The gears operate smoothly, and the OpenRoad winch motor is noticeably quieter than my buddy’s brand-name equivalent. We've mounted the winch on a 2-inch receiver hitch plate, allowing us to swap it between our Jeep and truck. It’s been put to work in all kinds of situations—pulling tractors out of mud, dragging fallen trees, and, no doubt, it’ll be invaluable this winter when we’re pulling drivers and vehicles out of snowdrifts or ditches. (I'm sure there will be some self-recovery, too!)Recently, while cleaning out a culvert after a downpour, our 4700-pound four-wheel-drive tractor got stuck in a muddy ditch. With the OpenRoad winch’s synthetic rope running through two snatch pulleys, I confidently pulled the tractor out. Using pulleys reduces the pulling force needed, which protects the winch and makes it more efficient. This is when a longer winch line is especially useful.Quick side note: There are several good online resources for calculating working loads and pulling forces in winching applications, as well as recommendations for pulley configurations. These can help improve efficiency, protect your equipment, and enhance winch safety.Bottom line:I highly recommend this workhorse winch for UTV or ATV applications with the handlebar-mounted hardwired control, the efficient winch motor is easy on smaller electrical systems and can safely pull 3000 pounds without extra tackle hardware. When the wireless remotes are working well, hitched up to a full-sized jeep or truck’s electrical system with a battery supported by an alternator and a couple of snatch pulleys, this winch—mounted on a receiver hitch—becomes the Swiss Army knife of winching jobs. It’s a great value, especially for the capacity and reliability that we've experienced with OpenRoad winches.Thank you for taking the time to read my review! Very much universal fit
I haven't had time to actually mount this on my John Deere, but the quality looks good and the extra mounting plate is going to come in very handy.Note that this is very much a universal fit, so expect to spend some time working all of that out.

Not Impressed
As an Amazon Vine reviewer, I much prefer to write positive reviews, but I'll give you my honest impression nonetheless.First off. the OPENROAD 3000 lb. ATV/UTV Winch, according to the included manual, has the same specifications as their 2500 lb. winch, with the exception of the cable size. Dimensions, horsepower, and amperage ratings based on load are all the same. This makes me wonder if the 2500 lb. winch has an undersized cable or if the 3000 lb. winch is overrated. While inspecting the fit, I discovered that the mounting plate is missing the holes to attach the winch. So I will need to drill it out to match the mounting plate as shown in the instructions. The next thing I noticed is that the instructions direct you to use the included mounting brackets to attach the control box to the winch. No such brackets were packed in the factory-sealed box. So I'm left to fabricate my own or mount the control box elsewhere, which is not what I wanted to do.All-in-all, I think this winch is cheaply-built, judging from the overall appearance and feel, along with the aforementioned. I think it's fair to compare it to my 2500 lb. Badlands winch. I've owned several sizes of their winches and have had good luck with them. I've never had a problem with part fit-up or missing parts. Given the choice, I'd pick another one over this winch. On sale, they're half the cost.

This kit cover all the bases
Likes: This is a through winch kit including most everything needed for most installations. The remotes are very handy especially when working alone. I did test drive the wench and everything works as expected. I also attempted to measure a parasitic draw but come up with zero.Dislikes: The description says nylon rope and the pictures says synthetics?? The black box is a bit large and might be hard to find a place to mount for some applications.I plan to install this wench on a trailer.

Installation is easy and pull force is good, but I'm not super fond of the way the electrical hookup
I got this as a winch for my stupid project car (a 90's econobox, not a full sized truck). I'm pretty happy with the installation, it was very easy, but I'm not a fan of how the control box hooks to the unit itself; there are lugs on opposite sides of the unit body, I would have preferred a gendered pigtail if at all possible; I might take the body apart and wire that up myself.I tried pulling my car up the driveway which is about a 15-degree incline, which this had no issue with; I'm happy with the strength and the wireless remotes are pretty great. 4/5 stars because it solves the problem, but could be built just a little better.
