Uncomfortable
Coming to this book, I went into it blank and I really think that's how this book is supposed to be read. This book is about a very important topic that's not talked about at all and there was so much I learned from this book.Although please make sure to read about the trigger warnings. Some scenes were very uncomfortable to read, which is as it should be!

Wonderful
Golden Boy is the story of a seemingly perfect guy, "golden" indeed: beautiful, young, best in his class and captain of his team, sorrounded by friends and raised in the perfect family, with only one secret detail. "Golden Boy" tells, through six narrative voices - all close to Max - his long and troubled path towards acceptance, both by himself and those around him. This novel is a tribute to the uniqueness of every human being, to gender identity disconnected from belonging to one sex; It is a rebellion against the binary construction of gender and an invitation to the acceptance of diversity, in all its forms

I loved it
I enjoyed reading from each of th characters' perspectives, a really interesting way to empathize within the whole story. The whole book was very well written and held my attention from start to finish. Very thought-provoking.

Couldn't put it down!
There doesn't seem to be much point in my giving a synopsis of this novel as nearly everybody else reviewing it has done an excellent job of that already. However what I do want to say is that it's been one of my most enjoyable reads of the year and I have, via Facebook, Twitter and word of mouth, been trying to recommend it to absolutely everyone I can think of as "a must read, completely compelling, page turner".Although I raced through it in record time of around 48 hours (sadly I didn't have the luxury of more free time or a holiday to finish it more quickly) this was a double edged sword because I was both desperate to reach a satisfactory conclusion and at the same time trying to eke it out so that I could have a little bit left for the next day and not have to say goodbye to the characters. The storyline is centred on a secret, which although revealed early, sets in motion a series of spiraling emotional and increasingly traumatic events. The great strength and appeal are the different voices of the characters that relay the various strands of the unfolding drama from each of their points of view. Each of the characters holds up beautifully and has a different mood and nuance. Max's little brother Daniel is particularly wonderful for bringing humour and lightening the mood at much needed moments. But without doubt it is the main character of Max who carries along the narrative. So often a book succeeds or fails on the strength of it's central figure and it couldn't have done better in this case than Max. He truly is the Golden Boy of the title, despite having a truly terrible time and the very worst of year of his life he is depicted so sympathetically and perceptively that you are constantly willing him to be able to transcend above it and reach his deserved happiness and potential.I have sons, one of around Max's age, this possibly being a factor that contributed to the book being so affecting. I couldn't help thinking, what would I do if this were my son? What if this was happening to him?It seems to me that the sign of a winning read is when you finish a book and then find yourself being envious of the people that you are recommending to, knowing that they still have the pleasure of it still to come.Make sure you take advantage of this pleasure!
