Follow the instructions, make sure your scalp is healthy, and this works!
I’ve had numerous keratin & Brazilian blowouts over the past 10-15 years. After my last salon treatment (Brazilian Blowout brand) 4 years ago, for $400, which barely lasted, I decided I would try one of the home treatments. I did a lot of research and landed on the original Keratin Research. While it did loosen my curls, and made my hair soft and shiny, it smelled awful for weeks and my hair felt so greasy. For reference, I have naturally dark blonde 2c/3a curly hair (see pics). I get baby highlights + a root shadow and toner like 3x/year. My hair is somewhat thin and with all of the heat styling I do to straighten it, put waves in it, etc. even with ALWAYS using high quality products, hair masks, and heat/thermal protectants, it’s still very prone to breakage & split ends. I only wash it 2x, maybe 3 a week, but in between I am using the heat tools. So I love doing a keratin treatment because it repairs my hair, plus, it makes it SO much more manageable in the hot, sticky humidity during these summer months in Florida. It took me probably 2 hours total to do the treatment at home. I just bought a bowl & brush to paint it on from Sally’s. I section my hair into 4 quadrants, and start in the back at the nape of my neck and work my way up. I recommend doing the salon/painting method, and make sure you’re painting the product on in very small sections, so as to saturate EVERY stand of hair. If you’re using too big of sections, you’re likely not getting every last strand, which is already difficult if you have thick and/or course hair. I get as close to the roots as I can, WITHOUT, going right to the root. Some people leaving reviews that it is burning their scalp are either going too far onto the root and saturating their scalp, or, they don’t have a healthy scalp (dry, dandruff, non-exfoliated, etc.) or both. Your scalp is skin like your face and you have to clean & exfoliate it like you do your face. I use the analogy of putting good foundation on bad, dehydrated, non-exfoliated skin - the good makeup is going to look bad, not because of the makeup but because of the condition your skin is in. Same with hair. You have to have healthy hair and definitely a healthy scalp for products to do what they’re supposed to do. I’d recommend people use scalp treatments for at least 1-2 months prior to a keratin treatment & at least 1x/week, use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of build up, that way the scalp treatments don’t have to fight through the build up to work effectively. Back to the process: after saturating my whole head, I wrap the hair around my scalp and cover it in a plastic processing cap. I left mine on for 1 hour and didn’t feel a thing on my scalp. After 1 hour, I rinsed it in the shower but just enough to get the product out and making sure the water was clear (I got the Inverto One, not for Blonde hair, but the liquid was purple and I do have blonde hair). I then blow dried it into 8 sections with a round brush like I do when I normally straighten my hair (sections: front bangs, bottom-back section, mid-section divided into 3, top section divided into 3). After it is like 95% dried, I divide it into those same 8 sections again, but take even smaller sections to run the flat iron through. I can’t stress this part enough, you must use very small, thin sections when doing the flat iron passing. Also reference the temperature guide for number of passes depending on your hair. Once this is done, that’s it! I did mine on a Friday night and Saturday morning I did wake up with some kinks in it, so I just blow dried them out with a round brush & ran the flat iron through them. I didn’t wash it untilMonday morning. So I left it on for approx 60 hours before washing it. I know it says you can wash it right after, but I find that it holds better and lasts longer when you let it sit for a few days before your first wash. It still doesn’t smell great, but it will go away after a couple more washes. I hope this deal detailed review helps people make sure they use the right product for their particular hair type, and also to follow directions precisely. If you’re not someone who can use a curling iron properly or even paint your own nails, then you shouldn’t be doing your own keratin treatment. You don’t have to be a licensed stylist, but it definitely takes some level of skill, and if you need help, ask a friend who is good at that stuff.

No harsh smell!!
I am a cosmetologist and I purchased this product because nothing I had used on a client had worked very well to straighten her hair and previous products had such an unbelievably strong odor. To the point of opening windows and tearing up! But this product works great on straightening and no harsh odor or long, complicated procedures. My only complaint is that it’s priced too high.

Yes, yes, yes!!!
Ok, I’ve been getting a keratin treatment done for almost $300 every summer. This summer I wanted to try and do it myself. First stuff I bought I thought I was going to DIE. My eyes, lungs, throat all on fire. I just about gave up but thought let me try a different brand. Finally stopped being a dummy and bought this since it is formaldehyde free.First of all, a bit of a chemical smell but NO burning eyes or throat. I love the fact that you leave it in then mostly wash out before drying and straightening. From what I can tell so far this works just as well as any of the other products you have to leave in when you dry.I will give warning to anyone with colored hair. Now I dyed my hair a dark red anticipating getting a keratin treatment. Now I’ve had this done so many times I know the outcome which is a light auburn red, perfect for summer and just what I wanted. It did exactly that. It lightened my red about two shades. I love it, but for those who DONT want it to effect their color you might want to try something else or be prepared to dye your hair after treatment. It was time consuming, I have short hair and from start to finish it took me a little over three hours. Now I really took my time and did the straightening process piece by piece but I wanted to be sure I was thorough. The result is silky straight beautiful hair and I am in love. I will give an update as time goes on if it lasts as I continue washing it, but so far I am in love! It gave me the exact result I wanted and saved me over $200. YES!

Destroyed my hair!!!!!!
My hair was extremely healthy, no split ends, it was silky and soft and the only complaint that I had was that it would get frizzy in the humidity. I used this product and followed the new updated instructions completely, and my hair is now dry and full of split ends. Literally every single hair on my head has split ends and is breaking off. Everytime I wash my hair there are clumps in the drain, and everytime I brush there’s little broken pieces all of the sink and countertop. I would not recommend this product to my worse enemy.

Works Great & Easy to Apply if you straighten your hair first
I purchased the Original Keratin Research Express Treatment. I watched a few YouTube videos where people used that product & it was very informative & helpful to see. I used a little over a 3rd of my 4oz bottle. It took me about 6 hours to do the entire process since I was doing my own hair & made sure I flat ironed each piece of hair 12+ times because I have very dense & coarse hair. I then left the product on my hair for 2 days before washing with Keratin Safe Shampoo & Conditioner this morning. I was very pleased to see that my hair was straight when I dried it but also excited that I didn't need to use nearly as much shampoo or conditioner in the shower because the treatment made my hair so much more manageable & silky. I then left & stood outside in the rain in front of the school waiting for students for about 20 minutes. I only had a few strands of hair buck up lol as I call it. In the past my hair would have reverted to a full blown afro in any type of dampness even with copious amounts of straightening & product on it. I am very happy with this & will continue using this treatment. I just suggest wearing gloves while using it. It makes your hands feel soft while its on them but when you wash your hands they then feel stripped & like sandpaper. I was able to exfoliate my face with just soap because of this lol but my fingers are still very uncomfortable. There was no burning of my scalp or hands but the fumes can sting your eyes a bit when you begin applying to hair around your face.
